Dear friends, This is a standard mailing explaining why I stop posting and cannot respond to any of your articles. Please don't post this letter in whole or in parts, and don't show it to people whose integrity you doubt. I should have been more careful, so there is none to blame but me. Somehow, I alerted Vulis that if he started sending threatening e-mail to Harvard professors, I will be distressed. Recently, he started harrassing the professor I was working with (******, Fields laureate, AAAS and NAA member, an academician who was nice to me for no reason I can fathom). As vfomin@panix.com, he sent a standard Vulis letter (sent by Vulis to many Chinese newsgroups numerous times in the past), accusing me in anti-Chinese racism on the basis of my article where I compared ****** with Gelfand and Landau (I purported to explain why I think that Gelfand is not a Jewish racist, as somebody claimed, referring to Shafarevich). This Sunday, he sent another letter, from his Compuserve account (disguised as Peter Vorobieff), where he threatened ****** with physical retribution because of his alleged Chinese racism and dislike of Jews. Also, this particular letter of Vulis was full of rude obscenities and ethnic slurs targeted to ******. As usually, he signed with pv02@lehigh.edu, Aryan Nations, http://www.lehigh.edu:/~pv02 Today, he sent at least six letters to ******, one of which I have seen (from vfomin@panix.com, it contained a long file of my articles, fairly obscene). They sent also a lot of ASCII pictures, Vulis style. ****** did not care, but demands to stop the mailings, because he does not want to see his name circulated along with racist slurs and obscene ASCII graphics (he is a prominent politician of mathematics, and needs to keep face). I value ****** much more than my Usenet contribution, so I see no other way to stop embarrassment but to stop posting whatsoever (and actually, I do this upon request of his secretary, who is my direct employer). Unfortunately, the same goes for Yulya: she also has to stop posting. I promise to grep the Net on verbit, and probably will read scs for a while. The Vulis campaign has one positive result: I am resolved to go to Russia as soon as we acquire the necessary documents. Yulya was totally sure that we will, but did not like to do anything. I was not sure if going to Moscow was worth the effort of packing, etc.: it is likely we'll be returning to States this Fall. Now, I cannot stay anymore, because I am embarrassed to be a source of ******'s suffering. So, in a couple of months, we will be posting from Russia. Misha, Wed Jan 10 18:14:17 EST 1996
