Когда мы готовились ко дню рождения, разбирали много больших коробок. И нашли шкатулку, а в ней -- три карты и этот старинный свиток. Свиток уже тронут временем. Видите? Оно его тронуло.
(надо показать свиток)
Но что-то все-таки можно разобрать. В свитке сказано, что тот, кому исполнится девять лет, сможет в этот день обрести второе лицо. Еще вроде бы сказано, что в этом ему может помочь эльфийский мудрец. Вот его карта. Похоже, что мудреца можно вызвать подходящим заклинанием с помощью этой карты. Но здесь сказано, что это может сделать только вот кто... видите?.. Mysterious Foreign Witch. Вот что это значит? (обсуждается) Она говорит только на иностранном языке. Ей нужен переводчик. Вот его карта. "Translator, Interpreter, Толмач." Больше карт нет. Похоже, что первым нужно вызывать этого самого переводчика. Что, будем вызывать?

Translator Ah. Mysterious Foreign Witch. Я ее знаю. А у вас есть ее карта? Без карты ничего не получится. Ну вот, смотрите. Там написано... кто может это прочесть?

(при участии достаточного количества маленьких детских гостей таинственная иностранная ведьма вызывается, сначала ее лицо закрыто маской, после эти чары рассеиваются)

Witch (она что-то роняет в процессе возникновения) Now what? I've been just trying to put the kettle on! And here you go with that invocation of yours, all of a sudden! Look what you have done to my kettle! It's so... changed... (огорченно рассматривает переводчика)

Translator Wait a second, oh Mysterious Foreign Witch! (детям) Вы поняли, что говорит волшебница? Я -- не очень. Она недовольна тем, что ее оторвали от важных дел и, кажется, считает меня своим чайником. То есть, она думает, что чайник превратился в меня! Мне бы хотелось ее в этом разубедить. Witch Oh. Not all of you. This one (indicating Translator) will make a fine kettle, perfect size, I'd say!

Witch By saying the magic words!

Translator (детям) Вы поняли, что она сказала? (Как-то слова ведьмы переводятся.) Я спрошу, как она превратит меня в чайник. (to the witch) And how do you turn me into a kettle?

Witch You see, when I say my magic words, not only the kids, but the whole world will turn into butterflies!

Witch What? You cannot summon the Elven Sage without His Ghostly Rabbit!

Witch Well, here you go. A man was looking at a portrait. When asked whose portrait, he replied: "Brothers and sisters have I none, but this man's father is my father's son." Whose picture was he looking at?

Translator (детям) Так. Понятно, в чем загадка? (Обсуждаем, в чем загадка.) Давайте хором: "It's the portrait of the son of this man!" (Все это время ведьма делает poker face!)

Witch OK. The magic wand gave its light, meaning that you are now qualified to summon the Elven Sage and his Ghostly Rabbit. The key is to pronounce the invocation spell rather loudly. He is sort of, well, he cannot hear quite well. At least not all the time.

Translator (детям) Эльфийский мудрец, кажется, не очень доволен, что кролик его сюда притащил... Но давайте спросим его, правда ли он король? Как спросить? (Добиваемся вопроса: ARE YOU REALLY A KING?)

Elven Sage Whom are you talking to?

Translator Why, you, of'course.

Elven Sage Oh. I thought it was to the Ghostly Rabbit. It cannot talk, you know. It is not equipped with the talking device.

Elven Sage Now you hear a tale and reflect on it.

On a certain island near Haiti, half the inhabitants have been bewitched by voodoo magic and turned into zombies. The zombies of this island do not behave according to the conventional concept: they are not silent or deathlike -- they move about and talk in as lively a fashion as do the humans. It's just that the zombies of this island always lie and the humans of this island always tell the truth.

The situation is enormously complicated by the fact that although all the natives understand English perfectly, an ancient taboo of the island forbids them ever to use non-native worlds in their speech. Hence whenever you ask them a yes-no question, they reply "Bal" or "Da" -- one of which means yes and the other no. The trouble is that we do not know which of "Bal" or "Da" means yes and which means no.

Now, here goes the first riddle. I once met a native of this island and asked him, "Does Bal mean yes?" He replied "Bal".

Translator Oh, please! No! Don't read it! Stop doing it at once! (детям) Вы знаете, что это?

Elven Sage The Ring of Power? Hmmm... but if I just... (опять пытается) -- No! No! (Появляется Ведьма, забирает кольцо и чайники.)

Translator (детям) Раз ведьма здесь, давайте попробуем спеть это "Пусть бегут неуклюже" по-английски. Oh Mysterious Foreign Witch! Do us a favour, let's sing a song together.

Mysterious Foreign Witch All right. You have been a good kettle, after all. (поем)

Let them run up and down,
Stumbling through, circling town,
